Technician Career Path - Apprentice Program

Tech Career Path

Ricart Automotive Group is happy to announce these different programs that are designed to develop those that are interested in furthering their career as an automotive technician. At Ricart Automotive Group we believe that one of the best ways to prepare for our future is to invest in the development and training of a young employee. With the complexities of an automobile these days this can take several years to accomplish. Over the past 20 years we have worked closely with local vocational and high school programs recruiting and developing high school students into independent automotive technicians. For aspiring technicians we have several different career path options.

For someone interested in working on Ford vehicles we have the Ford Automotive Student Service Education Training (ASSET) program. The Ford Motor Company sponsored ASSET program provides a 2 year associates degree in automotive technology. The ASSET degree program provides the graduating student with 100% of the Ford technical training certifications required by Ford Motor Company to complete any warranty repairs.

Technicians interested in working on the following specific brands of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Genesis, or in the Ricart Used Car Factory department we offer a slightly different plan for technician development. We have worked closely with Columbus State Community College in developing a 1 year long automotive education certificate program that focuses completely on automotive theory, operation, service, and repairs. During this period the student apprentice will attend classroom study 2 days per week and be able to work at the dealership 3 to 4 days while being trained and mentored by a master level technician. (40 hours max per week)

Ricart Automotive will pre-pay 100% of the tuition costs associated with all of the automotive specific training requirements at Columbus State Community College. Value of up to $12,000.

Ricart will provide an additional $4,000 retention bonus for the academic class requirements for the 2 year Asset Degree.

Ricart offers a Tool Program for entry level technicians that will either provide you up to $1,500.00 worth of tools to get started which are gifted to you after 2 years of employment, or a $1,500.00 reimbursement after your 2 year anniversary date for additional tools purchased.

Here at Ricart Automotive Group approximately 60% of our technicians have been developed through one of these training pathways. Several of our technicians that were once apprentices themselves are now mentoring the next generation of automotive technicians. The Following is an outline for the different career path options available.

Entry Level Automotive tech

Entry Level Automotive technicians 6 - 18 Months (typically no experience or possibly a high school Student) Entry level technicians with little to no experience will usually start out in our Express Service or Ford Quick lane departments. The dealership will provide the tools necessary to start at this level. Duties will include thorough inspection of vehicles, changing oil, tire service, wipers, filter replacement, brake service and repair, fluid exchanges, alignments, etc. The technician will have a performance review and evaluation every 90 days in the areas of attitude, conduct, punctuality, attendance, quality of work. If performance rates are high in these areas and the employee shows the ability to learn and is motivated to pursue a career in automotive repair then we would promote that technician into one of the service repair departments and one of the apprentice level programs we have to provide additional training and education for their growth and development.

Apprentice Level Automotive Tech

Apprentice Level Automotive Technicians 12-24 months (typically 1-2 years of experience working on vehicles) To become eligible for the program you must have a good attitude and desire to enhance your career. Be able to perform all routine service work without help or supervision. Apprentice level technicians will be working in the repair shop with a master level mentor technician that has proven himself as a good role model and leader for the development of the apprentice. His responsibility will be to train the technician how to diagnose and repair complex problems found on vehicles today. He will also allow the technician to slowly learn how to operate on an independant level making the future transitions easier. This level will require furthering your education and training through one of the programs currently supported at Columbus State Community College. The two year Ford Asset associates degree program or the one year Earn To Learn certificate program. Upon completion of either program the technician will be promoted to a first year flat rate independent repair responsibility.

First Year Independent Development 12 months ( typically 1-2 years of experience diagnosis and repairs) We offer 3 different pay plans for the technician to choose from at this level. There will still be leadership help at this level for continued development.

Exclusive Earn To Learn Program Partnership with CSCC

If you are looking for the opportunity to launch a rewarding and lucrative career? Then this program may be for you! This program has been developed and designed exclusively to allow an entry level technician the opportunity to learn skills in the classroom while at the same time the opportunity to apply those skills on the job. The program allows the technician to move into the repair shop as an apprentice while being trained by a master level technician. During this time the apprentice is creating their own pathway towards becoming a master certified level automotive technician. The program also provides a predictable classroom schedule of only 2 days per week. This allows the apprentice technician the opportunity to still “Earn While Learning” The dealership will schedule work around the students classroom schedule and allow up to a maximum of 40 hours per week during this period.

This is a one year commitment that is scheduled to start each summer semester at Columbus State Community College. (late May or early June)

This is a college level program with college level classes. It will not be easy! You will have to apply yourself in the classroom and be willing to commit to at least 10 hours of homework study per week to make this program successful for you.

To be eligible for this career development program you must have completed the following requirements in the following areas:

  • You have completed 6 to 18 months of quick service repair work or completed a high school senior year apprenticeship program at the dealership.
  • You maintain a positive attitude.
  • You have the ability to learn, use good judgement, and are a good listener.
  • Your quality of work is excellent at this current level.
  • You are not missing scheduled work days and are always here on time.

This program at Columbus State Community College would be a certificate of completion program with 100% of the classes being automotive related. This is not a two year associate's degree program that would require English, math, science, etc. to complete.
